The Central American nation is home to some great music festivals. Watch out for the following events when you’re in the country.
First up is Empire Music Festival, which takes place outside Guatemala City in May each year. Acts that played at past editions include Paul van Dyk and Steve Aoki.
For a more mystical experience, head to Cosmic Convergence at Santiago Atitlan. Looking down over the beautiful Lake Atitlan, the festival combines dance, music, yoga and art in December.
Electronic music fans should check out the Semana de Musica Avanzada, features events at different venues around Guatemala City. A combination of seminars and live performances, the festival is a great incubator for the country’s nascent electronic scene.
If you are in the second city of Quetzaltenango in November, put the Xela Music Festival on your calendar. Organized by the French Cultural Institute, the festival gives a platform to local musicians who play to crowds at six venues around the city.
For a more traditional experience, make the trip to the city of Coban in July. At this time, the city comes to life for the Rabin Ajau festival, featuring folkloric music and dance.
