Hip-hop festivals are hard to come by, even in the birthplace of the genre. Rock the Bells is now defunct, but Brooklyn Bodega’s Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival has taken its place as the premier event for rap music.
Unlike Summer Jam, this two-day festival is praised for its commitment to progressive artists alongside old-school veterans, eschewing the “flavor of the month” crowd that usually headline pop and mainstream hip-hop events. The event is also more than just music. Nas, Fabolous and Talib Kweli will be representing New York at the Finale Concert in Brooklyn Bridge Park, but the three days before Saturday will feature events showcasing various aspects of hip-hop culture.
July 13 marks The Hip-Hop Institute at Medgar Evers College in Crown Heights, featuring lectures and panels on criminal justice and entrepreneurship. The next day’s Dummy Clap Film Festival is a collection of screenings and film workshops, also taking place at Medgar Evers. Friday, July 15, is the JUICE Exhibition, showcasing a variety of hip-hop artists that range from dancers to sneakerheads.
Events are to take place rain or shine, no refunds. Learn more at bkhiphopfestival.com.
