The National Cherry Blossom Festival is held every year around late March and early April, when it’s predicted for Washington, D.C.’s, abundance of cherry trees to reach full bloom. This year’s festival will be held March 20 through April 12. From the opening ceremony to the closing parade, there are numerous events going on every day, so no matter which day (or days) you attend, you’ll be sure to find something to do. Here are some of the highlights you may want to keep in mind while planning your visit.
Every day of the festival, paddleboats are available for rent so visitors can view the cherry blossoms from the most popular observation point, the Tidal Basin. You can even reserve your paddleboat online before you arrive, and prices begin at $14 per hour from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Traveling with young children? The Blossom Kite Festival on March 28 is sure to thrill kids of all ages. Taking place on the Washington Monument grounds, the festival offers not only stations for children to make their own kite, but also competitions for more skilled fliers.
On April 4, there’s the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival. Before the free show, you can find musical performances and multiple outdoor dining options throughout the day, and then stick around for the fireworks at 8:30 p.m.
But if you’re look for something a bit more extravagant, tickets for the 2015 Official Cherry Blossom Grand Ball & Sushi Reception begin at $150 per person. The evening includes dinner, drinks, dancing and the crowning of the Cherry Blossom Queen. The event lasts from 6 p.m. until 12 a.m. on the last day of the festival.
Whatever your tastes, time, age or budget, you’re sure to find something to do during the three weeks of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
