For all things nautical, cruise to SAIL Amsterdam. The five-day event is the largest free public event in the Netherlands and one of the largest free nautical events in Europe. More than 600 ships, including more than 50 tall ships, from all over the world dock at Amsterdam’s Ij Waterfront. The first event was held in 1975 to celebrate Amsterdam’s 700th jubilee. SAIL Amsterdam returns every five years to showcase the city’s maritime legacy.

This year, SAIL Amsterdam will be spread out over five different areas in the city. Hundreds of thousands of people gather to usher the ships into the city and get the chance to climb aboard the old and new ships. Maritime-themed performances and concerts highlight the event. Food and beverage stands will be available throughout the site.
Tall ships, historic Dutch vessels, naval ships, replicas and modern ships comprise the participating vessels. This year’s spectacular tall ships come from Germany, Colombia, Spain and France.
SAIL Amsterdam takes place Aug. 19–23 this year. Each day will end with a fireworks display. Follow SAIL Amsterdam on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube for the latest information.
