Social seating is a type of social networking service for travelers. It gives users the option to choose their seatmates based on their personal preferences and social network profiles. It’s a system that uses data from Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and other social networks, to allow users to look at people with similar interests and then book a seat accordingly. Social seating is an opt-in system, so passengers will not have their information pulled unless they willingly agree to it.

Applicants to Delta’s Innovation Class, a mentoring program, can earn an airplane seat beside business leaders as they fly to industry events. Delta selects leaders in innovation on their way to events around the globe for the program. They’ll be sitting in the mentor seat, and the open seat next to them is your chance. Delta flies you to the event, gets you in and, most importantly, gives you one-on-one access that you might never otherwise get.

The Meet & Seat program on KLM allows passengers to choose their seatmates based on social-network profiles and lets you find out about interesting people who will be on board your flight, such as other passengers attending the same event as you at your destination.
