History

History buffs will delight in a stay at any of these historic hotels in New York.

Castle Hotel & Spa

The 31-room property in Tarrytown stands guard over the Hudson River with turrets, towers, a stone wall and a 75-foot main tower.

Singer Castle

Built as a family retreat for Commodore Frederick Gilbert Bourne, president of Singer Sewing Machine Company, Singer Castle’s 28 rooms sit on their own private island.

The Point Resort

The former camp of William Avery Rockefeller in Saranac Lake, the exclusive resort is only open to guests 18 and older and requires Black Tie attire in the evenings.

Mansion on Delaware Avenue

The Buffalo mansion went through ups and downs before being restored and re-opened in 2001, with 28 guestrooms and butlers.

Oheka Castle

The 32-room boutique hotel on Long Island was the former home of financier and philanthropist Otto Hermann Kahn during the Roaring 20s.

Oneida Community Mansion House

Here, more than 300 people once lived as a single family, challenging traditional societal roles. Today, it is a National Historic Landmark with a museum and bed and breakfast.

Morgan State House Inn

The former home of artist and women’s rights activist Alice Morgan Wright, in Albany, has an English garden, nine-foot tall double-glass doors and an enormous skylight.

Inn at Miles Wine Cellars

Located in the Finger Lakes region on Seneca Lake, the inn is accessible by land and water, and is, reportedly, home to some friendly spirits.

Greenville Arms 1889 Inn

In the Catskill Mountain town of Greenville, the inn makes hand-made chocolates and offers weekend workshops in quilting, collage and creative arts.

Chautauqua Institution

Home to summertime lectures and productions, the institution is also noteworthy for its historic guesthouses, such as The Ashland, built around 1901, and The Vera, circa 1880.
