In 1810, the first Oktoberfest celebrated the marriage of Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese with five days of festivities and a horse race finale. After years of centering on horse racing, Oktoberfest changed significantly once modern staples such as electricity, bratwurst and glass beer steins were introduced.
Over 200 years in existence, the tradition has become a way of life and deeply ingrained in German culture. The epic celebration begins with a 12-gun salute and the first keg tapping. Beer and food have taken center stage and become the most prominent aspect of the festival, and only local beers at that.
Entry is free and beer tents can be reserved, but walk-ins should arrive early as seating fills up quickly. There will be beer maids, costumes, a Riflemen’s Parade and local cuisine for patrons to indulge in while meandering through the festival grounds.
The fairground opens at noon with the attractions and sideshows closing at midnight on the weekends and 11:30 p.m. during the week. Beer is served until 10:30 p.m. every night of the festival until the event’s conclusion Oct. 3 at 11:30 p.m.
There will be 16 long days and nights of German beer, food and fun for tourists and locals to enjoy.
