Did you know the oldest rodeo in the United States isn’t out west at all, but rather in New Jersey? Cowtown Rodeo in Pilesgrove, New Jersey, started back in 1929 by Howard “Stoney” Harris Jr. and his father. The event became so popular, it eventually moved to a 4,000-seat arena in 1967, and now fifth-generation owners Katy and RJ Griscom keep the cowboy spirit alive with bucking broncs, fearless bull riders and barrel-racing. In fact, today’s bucking horses descended from legends of the 1970s.
The rodeo returns this year May 24, running every Saturday night through September. On opening night, which begins at 7:30 p.m., expect steer wrestling, bareback riding, barrel racing, tie-down roping, team roping, bull riding and saddle bronc riding. Tickets are $28 for adults and $12 for kids aged 3–12.
The venue also features a wide variety of vendors selling hot sandwiches, snacks and drinks. Take home some Western apparel at Cowtown Cowboy Outfitters Gift Shop, open every rodeo night and selling everything from hats to boots to souvenirs. Create your own one-of-a-kind hat with the help of hat designers at the rodeo’s Mobile Boutique Hat Bar, and keep your drinks refreshingly cold with your own YETI tumbler or water bottle at the YETI Merchandise trailer.
