It’s not the destination — it’s the journey. Whoever first exclaimed this common idiom must not have been familiar with air travel. Between delays, poor in-flight entertainment and unsavory fellow passengers, taking part in the miracle of flight can feel like a nightmare. However, there is one variable that passengers have control over, even if they do not always know it: personal space. By planning ahead and establishing a smart strategy, you can sit comfortably on your way to your destination.
Try to Get a 747
When booking a flight, it is best to check what types of airplanes your specific airline uses. While many planes use rows of three, 747s only have rows of three in the center and rows of two along the sides of the plane. This means a passenger has less of a chance of getting stuck between two others, and a greater chance for improvised aisle legroom.
Check for Upgrades
Spending a great deal of money is not always necessary to enjoying the luxury and space of first or business class. When you’ve arrived at the airport, ask the attendant at the check-in kiosk if there are any last-minute upgrades available. These upgrades are often not listed online and only can be accessed in-person.
Get an Exit-Row Seat
Every airplane has a few rows of seating located in front of the emergency exits. These seats have a great deal of extra space — legroom for a potential passenger. Getting one of these seats is often as easy as arriving early for check in and asking the person at the appropriate kiosk.
Keep in mind that because the occupant of these seats are tasked with the duty of helping with evacuation in the event of an emergency landing, children are sometimes not allowed in these seats.
