Vacuum-sealed plastic bags, also known as “space bags,” are an extremely effective way to get the most out of your suitcase or backpack’s real estate. You’ll save a ton of space and still be able to pack your favorite clothes (don’t overpack, though!)
These bags are great for travelers who prefer to travel with just a carry-on, but they can also free up valuable space for things like souvenirs.
In the past, these bags required a hose to suck all of the air out of the package. However, many vacuum-sealed bags now utilize a one-way valve to aid in compression. Simply place your clothing into the bag, seal it off and roll it up. Rolling the bag pushes the air out through the valve. You’ll be left with a flat, tidy little bag to toss in your luggage.
Don’t want to shell out for the fancy bags with the valve? Give larger Ziploc bags a try! Just fill the bag and close it most of the way. Roll everything up and then finish sealing the bag. Voila! You’ll have a nicely compacted set of clothing for a cheap price.
Once you’ve compressed all of the air out, your clothing will be protected from water and dirt, and your clothes should come out nearly wrinkle free if you folded them properly. Find vacuum-sealed bags on Amazon or at your local grocery store.
