Airline travel can be both a blessing and a curse. It’s easy to watch the miles fly by until your stomach starts to rumble. Avoid the inevitably unsatisfying and costly in-flight service by packing your own meal.
Despite TSA regulations on liquids and gels, packing a healthy and satisfying meal is a simple, budget-friendly option. Keep sauces, such as salad dressing or peanut butter, less than 3.4 ounces. Try bringing single serving packets of condiments, most are under one ounce.
Plan ahead and keep food fresh — freeze a small juice box and pack it with your meal. Think of your next in-flight meal like a picnic; focus on foods that keep well and are easy to eat. Most airlines allow plastic knives and forks but the less utensils and prep your meal requires, the better.
Sandwiches are standard travel fare — up the ante with a wrap. Wraps are a self-contained meal and can be customized to suit any dietary preference. Be sure to use warmed tortillas to prevent breakage and refrain from adding the salsa or dressing. Pack sauce in a small container and season as you eat to prevent a soggy meal.
Other options include hearty salads, such as pasta salad or a grain medley. Shredded salads, or meals with finely-cut vegetables, are easiest to eat in flight and only require one utensil. With the exception of soup, almost any meal can be made to suit your travel needs. Just remember to be considerate to your fellow passengers and prepared for their food envy.
