Rich with Native American history and culture, U.S. art, outdoor adventures and more, Taos, New Mexico, invites travelers to spend time in this northern New Mexico town. Taos has less than 7,000 residents, but is far from quiet with limitless outdoor recreation opportunities and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The city offers a variety of eco-friendly activities in and around the town. For a small town, Taos is home to several great museums. Taos Art Museum at Fechin House lies within an adobe-style house, displaying some of the finest artwork ever made in the town. Other museums include Millicent Rogers Museum, Martinez Hacienda, Kit Carson House and Museum, Blumenschein Home & Museum and Harwood Museum. Harwood Museum alone has provided stellar art, events and education since 1923.
Taos Pueblo, a UNESCO World Heritage site, also sits within Taos. This ancient pueblo belonged to a Taos-speaking Native American tribe of Puebloan peoples often referred to as Red Willow people, who have continually lived on the land for the last 1,000 years. Dating between 1000 and 1450 A.D., this historic site shows how 150 indigenous people lived.
For a unique experience, embark on an earthship tour to see sustainable homes built with bales of straw, old tires, bottles and even cans. Earthship homes are off-the-grid, self-sufficient homes made primarily from natural and recycled materials. People living in these homes harvest their own water from the sky and recycle the water many times, as well as grow their own food, treat their own sewage and collect power from sun and wind. The earthship community in Taos is called The Greater World Earthship Community, spanning more than 600 acres.
