After the holidays and the novelty of cold weather has long since passed, students around the country have one glimmering light at the end of winter’s long and dark tunnel. Spring break. Yes, that blissful window between the gloom of winter and the greenery of spring. For many, it’s a chance to kick back on a sandy beach surrounded by friends. But if you’re more the independent type looking for a window of quiet, there are plenty of ways to plan a spring break trip that will make anyone envious.
Remember safety. It might seem like a no-brainer, but if you’ve never traveled alone before, make sure you’re heading somewhere you feel safe. Choosing a place with which you are familiar is one way to make sure you stay safe, while adding day trips to nearby new places can add adventure.
Gather and organize information. When traveling alone, you need to be on top of your game. This means making sure your confirmation numbers are all in one place and easy to access, keeping a map handy just in case and being in-the-know on any landmarks or museums you want to visit. A thin notebook is the perfect way to keep it all right at hand, but be sure not to misplace it!
Scout out a deal. The timeframe for most spring breaks means there are great deals to be had on air and train fare. Plus, most hotels will still be in off-season, meaning a stay will set you back a little less than usual. Check Bing’s (www.bing.com) airfare predictor to see if prices could go down more, but don’t be afraid to jump on something if it’s in your budget.
Check regulations. Be it visas or passport requirements, countries have different obstacles to hopping over for a visit. Do your homework and come prepared, with cash if a visa fee must be paid in person or any supporting documentation if necessary. Nothing will put a damper on your trip faster than being held up at customs.
Find reliable communication options. Phone cards and international cell plans aside, it’s important to know how to contact your friends and family. Give a couple key people your hotel information and a tentative plan in case you are traveling between cities. Then, scout out places like Internet cafes or talk to the concierge about whether they allow guests to make international calls.
Make the most of it. A solo spring break may be your only time to be totally on your own in a foreign country, with no timetable but your own. So enjoy it!
