Few getaways offer the tranquility and exercise of camping. But let’s be honest: Not all camping experiences are created alike. For tent campers, so many campgrounds are overrun with long-term RV setups and kids, it can feel just as hectic at your site as it does at home. Connecting with nature can be hard when you’re dealing with screaming kids and prying eyes.
So what’s the adventurer to do? Well, many large campgrounds and parks offer a more intense alternative to campsites. Primitive camping isn’t for the faint of heart, but it is a great way to truly immerse yourself in nature.
Primitive camping sites are most often hike-in only, meaning you’ll need to park sometimes miles from the site and get there on foot. There are also strict regulations on bonfires, litter and what can be brought to the site, due to the often untended wilderness surrounding the space. It’s important to fully research any possible items that aren’t allowed at any given park, and make sure to get in touch with the office responsible for that specific location.
It’s crucial to bring enough supplies for your camping trip, as most are miles from any kind of facilities. Bring plenty of food and water, as well as any tool you may need to build your campsite. Bear-proof storage is a must, along with rope. Bring extra batteries for any flashlights or lanterns, as well, just to play it safe! It’s also important to give family or friends plenty of information on how to find you and your plans, such as dates of arrival and departure, and a map outlining where your site will be.
