Running out of water on a long hiking trip isn’t going to be much of a problem anymore. Vestergaard, an international company that develops products to help people in developing countries live healthier lives, has come up with a neat solution to access safe drinking water with the LifeStraw.

The LifeStraw is a personal water filter small enough to take with you everywhere you go. It weighs in at only two ounces and is just nine inches long, so you can slip it into your pack or your back pocket.

It’s shaped like a straw and is capable of turning 1,000 liters of contaminated water into safe drinking water by filtering out harmful bacteria.
By placing the tube into a body of water like a creek or even a puddle, the hollow fiber technology allows it to filter the water without the help of chemicals. The makers claim that it filters out 99.9999 percent of bacteria. It’s as simple as sticking the bottom into contaminated water and sucking clean water out the top.

The company also sells companion products like a water bottle that filters as you go and a high-volume water purifier that can be shared among multiple people. Learn more at eartheasy.com and vestergaard.com.

Are You Ready for the Final Switch to Real ID?

Yesterday, TSA began enforcing new identification guidelines, a change that’s been a long-time coming. Now, travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued ID in order to fly on domestic flights, in lieu of a non-compliant driver’s license (some other forms of identification, such as passports, will still be acceptable).
