Travelers, road trippers and backpackers will often carry a first aid kit in case of any medical emergencies, but if you find yourself in a remote area, it may not be enough without getting to a hospital. In the event of a serious wound, QuikClot can prevent hemorrhaging and buy you more time to get to a hospital.
Developed by Z-Medica, QuikClot is a line of hemostatic devices that evolved over several years of development and is currently in their third-generation design. The products utilize kaolin, a naturally occurring, in-organic mineral known to accelerate the body’s natural clotting cascade. The substance is impregnated into non-woven polyester/rayon gauze, making the dressing procedure identical to normal bandaging. Kaolin does not contain either human or animal proteins, does not cause any allergic or exothermic reactions and has a five-year shelf life.
Since its inception, QuikClot has been championed by military, medical and law enforcement professionals around America. It is advised the device only be used in emergency situations. The hemostatic agent is effective in preventing blood loss, but might cause complications for minor wounds.
