Brunch seems to be a quintessential part of Los Angeles. Real Food Daily, the innovative vegan restaurant chain, now offers a delectable brunch menu toaccommodate any dining needs and allow guests to explore the possibilities of plant-based cuisine.
Twenty-one years ago, Real Food Daily opened its doors in downtown Santa Monica. The causal restaurant and bakery embodies Anne Gentry’s clean eating philosophy and makes plant-based cuisine accessible. Real Food Daily stemmed from Gentry’s love of cooking and the lack of plant-based food available in LA at the time. The menu presents plant-based cuisine in a new light and focuses on healthy food combinations, not just faux-meat dishes. The seasonal specials encapsulate the flavors of the season in each meal while the standard menu items are based on macrobiotic nutrition principals.
Gentry still oversees the restaurant and feels it helps show vegan and vegetarian food in a new light. Brunch is served from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends and is divided into four sections: Brunch Plates, Scrambles, Off the Griddle and Breakfast Bowls. Gentry suggests the tofu scrambles stand out for their hard-to-achieve texture and colorful presentation.
The Breakfast Sammie ($12) is a play on McDonald’s Egg McMuffin and features marinated tofu, tempeh bacon, chipotle aioli, vegan cheese, avocado, lettuce and tomato sandwiched inside a flaky, house-made biscuit. Delicate, square hash brown or fresh fruit accompanies the sandwich. For something sweet, order the French Toast platter. The generous portion of fluffy French toast with mixed berry compote, tempeh bacon and maple syrup. The French toast is made from Real Food Daily’s own bread and a new, lighter vanilla flaxseed batter. The French toast achieves the perfect balance between moist and crunchy — it is flavorful enough to stand alone or hold up to a generous pour of syrup.
Lunch and dinner options are a multi-faceted dining experience that reimagines the label “vegan food.” In-house baked goods are made fresh daily and complement any meal. Similarly, fresh-pressed juices and smoothies make an excellent grab-n-go or light snack. The Kale ‘n’ Cuke Lemonade is light and refreshing while the salted caramel coconut ice cream and hemp milk milkshake is an indulgent treat. Real Food Daily also recently opened a location at LAX’s Terminal Four and offers travelers a modified menu; they serve breakfast, lunch and baked goods all day. Stop by for a wholesome lunch or dessert. Or visit one of Real Food Daily’s three sit-down locations for a relaxed, moderately priced vegan dining experience. Enjoy plant-based cuisine LA-style!
