One of the drawbacks of tourism is the effects on the environment. It seems that daily we are hearing about cherished destinations like Machu Picchu or the Acropolis being negatively impacted by the effects of thousands of daily visitors. These visitors are often completely unaware of the damage done.
Being aware of the impact we’re having is crucial to preserving these fragile locations and the planet as a whole. There are some simple steps we can take to reduce the carbon footprint we leave behind as we pursue our travel dreams.
The biggest change we can make is to leave every place as clean as, if not cleaner than, the way we found it. Packing out your trash is a necessity when doing things like back-country camping in the wild, but there is no reason we shouldn’t practice these measures everywhere we go. Make an effort to be conscious of the waste you generate and dispose of it properly.
Use eco-friendly products to reduce single-use plastic waste. While you may not be able to transport liquids in your bag once you arrive at the airport, a reusable water jug or coffee is easy to carry and can be filled just about anywhere.
Choose your accommodations wisely. These days, hotels work hard to keep up with the demand for eco-friendly and sustainable products and practices. Choose to stay in places doing their part to help you do yours.
Reduce your use of fossil fuels. Exploring a destination on foot or by bike is a great way to discover the hidden gems tour buses would pass right by. Stretch your legs and enjoy the freedom of your own two feet whenever possible.
