Weddings / How To's

The last time you got a tux was for your prom … and your mom helped you with it. Since it’s been a while since the last time you got this formal, follow these tips to look your best for the big day.

Learn the Code

Wedding parties often want a uniform look, while guests will usually be restricted to formal or semi-formal wear. If you’re not a groomsman, you’ll probably be fine with a suit but make sure to check the dress code and see if it’s a black tie affair. Wedding planning is also stressful enough, so don’t wait until the last minute for your rental. You’ll have a wider selection and some peace of mind.

Get a Classic Fit

Whether you’re buying or renting a tuxedo, it’s best to go with a classic style that will stand the test of time. Even if it’s a rental, people will be looking back on those photos for decades. You’ll be choosing from tuxedos that have been worn many times before, so watch for signs of wear and try and work with the place to get the right fit. Some places will do sewn adjustments, but more often they’ll use Velcro or safety pins.

Find the Right Accessories

The most formal dress codes will require a bowtie with your tuxedo. Clip-ons are easy, but for the best look you should go on YouTube and learn how to tie one in 15 minutes. No tuxedo is complete without a white shirt either, as the contrast is important for that formal look. Stick with the turn-down collar; wing-tips are really only required for a tailcoat. Some people will tell you a waist covering isn’t necessary, but for the complete tuxedo look you’ll want a vest or cummerbund.
