If you are on the road and get hungry in Guatemala, you don’t normally expect to chance upon a bastion of traditional cuisine.
Seasoned road warriors may be accustomed to a diet of chips and hot dogs, but it was a pleasant surprise to find Paseo Xejasmin in Tecpan, Guatemala. Around two hours outside Guatemala City on the road north, the restaurant is a popular lunch stop for locals on their way to Lake Atitlan or Quetzaltenango.
While you may have been offered Guatemalan dishes in the capital or the tourist hub, Antigua, Paseo Xejasmin is arguably a better spot to tuck into local favorites. The breakfasts are famous for their homemade jam, which is an important part of the huge portion of pancakes, while you can try pepian or kaq’ik for lunch and dinner. Both are traditional Guatemalan stews that will give you the energy boost you need to carry on your journey.
With delicious food served up in an old farmhouse, it is a no brainer to recommend Paseo Xejasmin. The staff is friendly, prices are reasonable and the setting is spectacular. Make sure you stop here instead of eating pre-packaged food from gas stations along the route!
A meal for two with two soft drinks cost $24.
