A true test of a great town is a great wine bar, and Ambler, Pa., does not disappoint. Located on the historic town’s main street, Dettera Restaurant and Wine Bar offers a sophisticated culinary experience in a laidback atmosphere. The New American cuisine, created by executive chef Jeffrey Powers, pairs perfectly with Dettera’s extensive wine menu, comprised of new and old world selections.
The restaurant itself is warm and welcoming with unique architectural features like exposed trestle ceilings, shadowbox light fixtures, red silk umbrella chandeliers and a charming, outdoor courtyard dining space. A custom-made wine cellar is suspended over the bar, spanning the main and second-floor dining areas.
My fiancé and I visited Dettera for the first time on a Tuesday, when the bar offers a wide variety of small plates for a discounted price. We figured it would be the best way to sample as many dishes as possible, and we were not disappointed with our choice. After selecting a chilled bottle of Villa d’Orvieto 2013 Trebbiano, we selected six small plates to share and a roasted cauliflower pizza with caramelized onions, house-smoked bacon and Taleggio cheese.
The pizza was outstanding and was a perfect introduction to our small plates. We opted for the Magret Duck Breast served with Black Trumpet mushrooms and couscous; the Alaska Halibut with Kohlrabi, Bok Choy and black rice; the grilled sirloin with fingerling potatoes and Beech mushrooms; homemade Pappardelle with local mushrooms in a white-wine sauce; the Agnolotti with braised beef, pork and bacon; and the English Pea Gnudi, served with English peas, bacon crumble and a parmesan crème.
Each dish was beautifully presented and perfectly prepared. While we thoroughly enjoyed every bite, the Alaska Halibut and the homemade Pappardelle pasta stole the show.
While we got a great taste for what the restaurant’s chef can do, we look forward to our next visit.
