La Vieja Bodega is one of many gems hidden among the rolling hills of Spain’s La Rioja wine country. The rustic winery was converted into a restaurant that serves some of the best traditional Riojan dishes in Spain – it’s a must visit for anyone venturing to the region.
The building is surrounded by beautiful gardens and includes a glass terrace overlooking the grounds. Inside, you’ll also find two stone calados, or underground wine cellars with seating. Brick walls, wood ceilings and a fireplace all come together to create a cozy atmosphere perfect for an evening meal. It also doesn’t help that there are more than 500 wines under the label.
The cuisine here was some of the best in all of La Rioja, and certainly in the town of Casalarreina. The braised oxtail was absolutely delicious, while the ravioli with wild mushrooms was a surprising delight. I wish I had time to explore more of the options here. The staff was also incredibly helpful with suggestions on both food and wine, and made us feel right at home. Just be wary of sampling too much, and hold on tight to your purse strings because dining here is not exactly cheap.
I would happily recommend La Vieja Bodega to family and friends, and can’t wait to return here someday.
