Each year, the British seaside town of Whitstable welcomes visitors from all over the country for its oyster festival.
While Whitstable is a popular daytrip destination throughout the summer, the town comes alive for the oyster festival. The 2016 edition ran from July 21–31, and it was a truly spectacular experience.
The seafront was turned into a fair, packed with musicians, food stalls and drinks tents. Sitting out on the sea wall slurping down some oysters was a particularly fine way to spend a Sunday afternoon, especially washed down with some locally brewed porter.
Restaurants throughout town make a special effort at festival time, and, of course, oysters are at the forefront of their offerings. Many of the popular spots like Samphire and Wheelers Oyster Bar were fully booked, so make sure to call ahead.
When it comes to drinking at the best pub in town is the Old Neptune, which is right on the beach. A live band added to the carnival atmosphere as the sun set over the picturesque coastline, adding to a magical day.
Whitstable is just over an hour from London St Pancras station by train, so a daytrip is more than feasible. Of course you can visit all year-round, but the Oyster Festival is the most popular time of year.
If you fancy a boozy day out or a relaxed day by the sea, it’s worth checking out the Whitstable Oyster Festival.
