Reviews / Entertainment

The Wire Opera House is the pride and joy of Curitiba and, after visiting, it’s not hard to see why. The breathtaking structure is truly a work of art.

Opened in 1992 and designed by architect Dominic Bongestabs, the circular structure is capped with a polycarbonate roof and able to hold up to 2,400 spectators at any given time. The wire-like steel tubing of the house lies in stark contrast to the surrounding forest, but yet still somehow manages to hold itself like it belongs there.

Perhaps more beautiful than the opera house are the surrounding grounds. Built inside of an abandoned quarry, you’d never know the place used to be filled with rocks if they didn’t tell you upon arrival.

Surrounding the structure is a forested park and lakes filled to the brim with various fish and several bird species flying around. There’s also a waterfall on the ground that, while not spectacularly large, was still wonderful to see.

I wasn’t fortunate enough to visit when there was a performance happening, but it was still a treat to walk around and explore the grounds. It’s truly a testament to the wonder of human creativity and worth a trip if you’re in town.
