Truth be told, I’m not much of a fan when it comes to art. Walking through a museum for hours on end sounds incredibly boring, which is why I was somewhat skeptical about touring the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam’s most famous exhibit of Dutch art and history.
It turns out my fears were without merit because the museum is one of the most fascinating sites in all of the Netherlands. It emphasizes some of the most famous Dutch artists throughout history, including enormous pieces by Rembrandt that were easily the most exciting to witness in person. Since the museum itself is so vast, I recommend hiring a guide to show you the most important parts.
The crowds are something of a nuisance — by far some of the largest I’ve come across outside of the Louvre, so you might be best suited by focusing on the highlights tour. It’ll show you all of the most influential pieces by the Dutch Masters and allow you to weave through the museum in a faster manner. If you do have some extra time on your hands, other famous artists from throughout Europe are also featured here. On your way out, don’t forget to stop by the gift shop and café to purchase replicas of your favorite pieces.
Tickets for entrance to the museum are €17.50 if you book online.
