Want to surprise your favorite person with an impromptu, far-flung getaway this Valentine’s Day (or anytime this season)? Skip the standard romantic destinations like Paris or Prague, and see what awaits in Hungary.

For your stay, you have a range of romantic, luxury options, such as Four Seasons Hotel Gresham Palace Budapest, or, if you don’t mind staying a little outside of Budapest, you can book a stay in a castle. Botaniq, Castle of Tura offers a historic setting, spa and wealth of fairytale-worthy experiences.

As you fill your itinerary, be sure to snag reservations at one of Hungary’s multiple Michelin-starred restaurants, such as Platan Gourmet or Stand. You can also make plans to experience the wines of Hungary. Hungary has six different wine regions, and the Wines of Hungary directory makes planning a tour of any number of wineries easy.

Of course, the winter season is more suitable for snow sports than grape growing, so don’t hesitate to pack your winter gear. Strap on some skates and take a turn around Lake Velence, a popular and all-natural skating spot that’s also the third-largest lake in the country. It’s additionally just a short distance from Budapest.
