The Roundhouse Restaurant is a local staple that has been around for a long time, which is probably why most tourists recommend visiting it at least once while you’re in Cape Town. Locals on the other hand, don’t seem particularly fond it.
After stopping in for lunch, I can kind of understand why. First off, the setting is pretty spectacular and provides some gorgeous views of Camps Bay. The food is also plated in an upscale way, unless you’re dining on pizza. From what I could gather there are separate menus for outside and inside seating with inside being a bit more of a fine dining experience.
I sat outside for the views and the cheaper prices. I’m not sure what I was expecting but the pizza I had was loaded heavily with cheddar cheese and oil, making for an unpleasant meal. The salad I had, on the other hand, was perfectly prepared and contained just the right amount of dressing.
If you’re a wine drinker, I can certainly see why this place might appeal; the list of available drinks was endless, yet a little expensive.
I can’t speak for the fine-dining menu, but this place seems more focused on style rather than substance and obviously caters to tourists (for whom they jack up the prices). The atmosphere is enjoyable, but I wouldn’t recommend it for someone looking for a delicious South African meal.
