North Korea is one of the least visited places in the world for obvious reasons, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t safe to visit. In fact, it’s one place where being robbed or beaten is highly unlikely as long as you follow the rules set forth by the regime.
Be Respectful
No rational human being thinks the way North Koreans are treated by their government is acceptable, but that’s not a sentiment you want to share while in the country for no other reason than it will almost certainly get you arrested. Stay positive and don’t disparage the government or leaders.
Follow the Rules
Tourists are only able to explore North Korea through a sanctioned tour and must always follow a schedule set about by the guides and the regime. It’s not advised to try and wander away from the group at any time.
Always Bow
The reality is North Koreans are taught to revere their leader from a young age and everyone who enters the country is expected to do the same (the regime actually tells citizens tourists are there to pay their respects). When around statues of Kim Jung Un or former leaders you must bow and possibly lay flowers if instructed to do so. Do not argue.
Be Less American
If you know Korean at all, you’ll quickly realize there is an enormous amount of anti-American propaganda in the country; they do not like us. Avoid wearing U.S. flag shirts or hats or talking about how much better America is than North Korea unless you want to end up in jail.
