Turkey has long been known for its unique location, straddling the Arab world and the European. One of the best places to experience that cultural mash-upis the city of Istanbul. It is a busy metropolis, not unlike many European cities, but the influences of the Arab world are also quite present, making it one of the most diverse and interesting places on earth.

Here are a few things to know before visiting Istanbul that can help any woman feel safe and enjoy her stay.

Though many woman will be wearing head scarves, or hijab, it is an extremely liberal country in terms of religious freedom so unless you practice this personally, there is no mandatory way to dress.

That being said, it is always a good idea to air on the conservative side, especially if wandering alone, so pants or maxi skirts and higher cut t-shirts are always a safe choice.

There is an active nightlife in Istanbul so make sure to take a clearly marked cab home and insist on their use of the meter — more for the sake of your precious dollar than your safety.

Stay alert in touristy areas like Istiklal Street or any of the markets, protecting your bag from pickpocketing.

As always, if you feel unsafe anywhere find a well-populated area, try not to appear lost and trust your gut.
