If you find yourself in San Antonio, there’s no doubt you’ll hear about the River Walk. But is it worth the hype?

The No. 1 tourist attraction in Texas, the River Walk is actually a series of walkways along the San Antonio River. It’s designated as a public park and is open year-round, with restaurants, shops, hotels and more lining the walkway. At first glance, the River Walk looks like a cheesy tourist attraction. And, to be fair, it is. With dozens of mediocre restaurants, overpriced trinket shops and massive hotels, it looks like a place you’d want to stay far away from.

But as you stroll along the river, it becomes charming in its own way. Particularly in the morning or between lunch and dinner hours, the walk is peaceful, less crowded and, frankly, nice to look at. Tour boats float lazily down the river and river taxis are common too. And when the sun begins setting, the mariachi bands start playing and the twinkling lights are turned on, you can see why people sheepishly love this place.

Our suggestion? Take an afternoon walk or post-dinner stroll through the River Walk. Skip having a full meal anywhere — there are better options off the walk, though if you really are starving, Boudro’s is a safe bet — and opt for a pre-dinner cocktail at an outdoor table instead. Soak in the atmosphere and then head to the nearby Esquire Tavern for much better food and drinks.
