A lot of people prefer to hit the open road when traveling rather than take to the skies, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that. In some instances it can cost you a lot more money, though. Here’s some tips to save on gas while you’re on the road.
Ditch the SUV
If you own an SUV you’re probably aware of their one big downfall: it costs a pretty penny to fill up the tank. That’s why, at least on a long road trip, your best bet is to leave it behind. If you’ve got a second car waiting in the wings, great, but if not you might want to shell out the money for a rental. If you’re going to be on the road a long time, it’ll save you money in the long run.
Avoid the Mountains
Traveling uphill takes a larger toll on your car than traveling down. Whenever possible, avoid any routes that’ll take you through the mountains to avoid a little extra crunch on your wallet. Unless the route around is incredibly far out of the way, then you might just have to bite the bullet.
Avoid Holidays
When more people hit the road, gas companies unfairly hike up the prices. Plan your trips around major holidays to avoid the sky-high rates.
Watch Your Speed
Sometimes you can be in a hurry to get where you’re going, but impatience will cost you. It takes more gas to go 80 mph than it does 60. Lay off the gas pedal for a bit to save a few bucks on your next trip. Also, try coasting to red lights and stop signs rather than stomping the breaks, since accelerating quickly burns extra fuel.
Book Wisely
Many people aren’t aware some hotels offer discounts and gas cards when you book with them. Be sure to check ahead for great deals before settling on where you’re going to sleep.
Leave the Extras at Home
Weight plays a part in how much gas you use, so try leaving things you don’t really need at home. The less stuff you bring along, the less fuel you’ll burn.
