If you’re traveling on a budget, there are a lot of ways to save money. Limit yourself to a carry-on, stay with friends and family, take public transit to get around, cook instead of eating out … savvy travelers know all the money-saving tricks.
But there’s one thing it’s hard to save money on: Airline tickets.
Airfares get more expensive every year, and depending on your destination, you might have no other option for travel. So, how do you keep costs down when buying plane tickets?
Try this simple trick: Buy your airline tickets separately.
If you are purchasing fares for multiple passengers, buying them one at a time instead of as a group, and you can save hundreds of dollars.
When you purchase multiple tickets at once, airlines charge you the cost of the most expensive ticket for every passenger, even if some fares might have been less expensive. By booking tickets separately, you will get the cheapest price available for each seat.
This trick is especially effective if you are booking within six weeks of the date you plan to fly, when there are fewer low-cost seats available.
The booking process will take a little longer, and you may have to give up the idea of everyone sitting together on the plane. But if you need to save some money on your next family trip, the slight inconvenience could really be worth it.
