While pickpocketing has become less common in our contemporary society, money is still being stolen from travelers at airports. Many thieves use portable scanners that read the radio frequency signals emitted by credit cards and other possessions with RDIF chips. With this information, they can access personal data and even sometimes transfer funds between accounts. Luckily, tactical clothing company SCOTTeVEST has developed a series of RFID blocking products to protect travelers’ information from being stolen.
The SCOTTeVEST Blackout Pocket Level 1 ($20) uses RDIF-blocking “RDIF Armor” to protect credit cards, passports and wallet contents from digital theft. The sleek five-inch by 6.5-inch design can be carried in hand as a stand-alone pouch or stored in most coat pockets. When not being used to store valuables, it can double as a TSA-approved toiletries bag, able to hold about one quart of hygiene supplies.
The SCOTTeVEST Blackout Pocket Level 2 ($40) uses industrial grade material to protect cell phones from being scanned or tracked — even by the NSA, according to creator Scott Jordan. While in the pocket, the phone is literally “blacked out” or sent off the grid, allowing even the most paranoid travelers to rest easy.
