Tips / Destination

Perhaps more than any continent in the world, Europe is a fantastic place to see by rail.

Well-developed national networks and integrated systems mean traveling by train is a breeze across most of the continent. One of the major benefits of integration is the Eurail pass, which allows unlimited train travel in a certain period of time.

There are multiple kinds of tickets, valid for travel in one country, up to four countries or all 28 European Union states. However, they all represent great savings over buying individual train tickets.

The passes are a popular choice for cash-strapped students who want to see the continent during summer holidays. It’s possible to make your way around Europe, staying in hostels and campsites and traveling by train, while spending little cash.

If you buy a one-month pass, you could feasibly travel from Madrid to Barcelona, across the south of France to Italy before taking in some of the Alps in Switzerland and France. From here, cross into Germany to sample the delights of Munich and Cologne before crossing back into France to visit Paris. This is just one of thousands of possible routes that could allow you to see some of Europe’s greatest attractions in just 30 days.

Thanks to Eurail, you can pack in plenty of experiences in a short space of time, perfect for summer holidays for college students or shorter breaks for millennials in the working world.
