Semester at Sea sounds like a dream come true. Who wouldn’t want to travel the world aboard a seven-deck ship, voyaging to foreign ports of call while learning from a group of dedicated field experts?
The SAS program is a traveling campus sponsored by the University of Virginia. Undergraduate students who sign up will experience a unique study experience that awards transferrable credit to most four-year colleges in the United States. The program is open to all majors and is much more than just an extended spring break; the ship visits everywhere from Denmark to Burma, and offers classes in global marketing, anthropology, marine biology and more.
In-country field programs allow students to visit sites like Angkor Wat and the Pyramids of Giza, or to participate in marine turtle research. The ship also welcomes lifelong learners of all ages for non-credit adventures. Most student cabin accommodations house two occupants, but an economy option is also available. The ship also boasts a 9,000-volume library and an onboard wireless network to ensure students have study materials readily available.
The next voyage sets sail in spring 2015 and will last slightly over three months. Learn more about SAS or apply for one of their programs here.

This year, the Northern Lights put on quite the display across Ireland, but don’t think these lights are the only thing you can see in Ireland. In fact, many spots across the country provide some of the best opportunities to stargaze thanks to low levels of light pollution. Ireland has three International Dark Sky Parks and even more spots which, although not accredited, are worth a visit for anyone wishing to see the sky in its unfiltered form.
