Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa recently announced its new Kuleana Series, highlighting Hawaiian culture. The first-of-its-kind interactive augmented reality experience from PixlBank is exclusive to resort guests.

The resort is situated on 23 acres at Pu’u Keka’a (Black Rock) on Ka’anapali Beach. Upon check-in, guests receive a welcome portrait with QR code, providing access to a map of interactive plaques throughout the property. Each of the 11 plaques features a “living portrait” of a cultural educator or scientific expert, detailing the island’s history, culture and landscape. Simply point your smartphone camera toward the portrait and marvel as the image comes to life.
The first plaque features Jay Penniman, project manager, Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project. Penniman leads a team of biologists, conservationists and ecologists in restoring the native seabird population. Other experts involved in the series cover topics including the importance of using mineral-based sunscreen, solar astronomy, endemic species of Hawai’i and the meaning of “aloha.”

“The term ‘Kuleana’ refers to the principle that each person has both a responsibility and privilege to care for and protect the land and the community to which they belong,” said Tetsuji Yamazaki, general manager, Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa. “It is a fitting descriptor of this program as the resort continues to uplift gentle tourism and the exploration of Maui for new and returning guests alike.”
