The list of dessert wines comes at the end of a meal and is punctuated by various types of sherry. But, how to choose? Sherry, a fortified white wine, is made from the Palomino grape harvested within the “Sherry Triangle” of Spain, which extends from Cadiz (including Jerez de la Frontera) to Sanlucar de Marrameda to El Puerto de Santa Maria.
Sherry comes in different versions, from lighter varieties like Manzanilla and Fino to heavier wines aged in a barrel, like Amontillado and Oloroso. Sherry’s history dates back to the 13th century and by the 16th century the liquid was sought after by wine lovers across the globe; barrels of the vino even made the trip to the New World with Christopher Columbus.
When in Andalusia, be sure to visit the boutique Bodega Tradicion, which has fantastic art in addition to rare vintages; the larger Bodega Marques del Real Tesoro’ Valdespino, which still makes its sherry from a single plot; and the Osborne vineyard, one of the oldest still in existence, to sample a range of aged sherries. If you want even more sherry culture, book a room at the 19th-century Hotel Palacio Garvey, which was once the home of the sherry-making Garvey family.
