Bordering the Tibetan Plateau at an elevation of about 9,000 feet, Shinta Mani Mustang – A Bensley Collection perches high above the town of Jomsom in the isolated kingdom of Nepal. The latest hotel from architect Bill Bensley and Jason M. Friedman is the third hotel in the Shinta Mani – A Bensley Collection hotels group, and opened its doors last month to guests.
The 29-suite hotel (each designed in the style of a traditional Tibetan home and spanning nearly 2,500 square feet with floor-to-ceiling windows) is located 300 miles west of Everest and was one of Asia’s most anticipated openings of 2023. As the first property in the collection outside of Cambodia, the hotel picks up guests by Jeep at the Jomsom Airport and whisks them to the massive wooden doors in just five minutes.
“Mustang” in Tibetan translates to “Plain of Aspiration,” and that is exactly what Shinta Mani provides, as the hotel is designed spoils guests with a remarkable 360-degree, luxury experience in the Himalayas. Its design and offerings take advantage of this mythical region, from its art-covered walls and locally sourced stone from which the hotel is made, to its curated guest journeys.
Guests can dine at the 60-seat Nilgiri Restaurant overlooking the majestic mountain range it is named after and choose from a remarkable wellness program designed by a local eleventh-generation Tibetan Amchi Doctor, using traditional herbal medicine. Guests can also embark on stunning adventures honoring the traditions of local Sherpa hospitality. A selection of immersive tailored experiences includes trekking to local villages and temples with stunning vistas, horse riding, rock climbing archery, cycling, helicopter tours and more, allowing guests to gain full exposure to one of the most unique and preserved regions in the world.
The all-inclusive, minimum five-night stay comprises accommodation, food and beverage, spa treatments, hiking permits, a personal Bensley Adventure Guide, all government taxes and roundt-rip vehicle transfers from Jomson Airport. Prices start at $1,800 per couple per night.
In keeping with Shinta Mani’s philosophy of giving back to the communities in which it operates, the resort works closely with the Pasang Lhamu Foundation, founded by the owning family in memory of Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to blaze a trail to the summit of Mount Everest in 1993.
