The Key West-based Papa’s Pilar, a rum brand inspired by author Ernest “Papa” Hemingway, recently installed a life-sized statue of the author in the brand’s Distillery & Experience Center. The installation marks the first of its kind in Key West and will remain a permanent fixture at the distillery.
The six-foot bronze statue welcomes visitors to pull up a stool, as if having a drink with Hemingway himself. Curated in partnership with SPMDesign, each detail incorporated into the statue seeks to bring out feelings of nostalgia. The Hemingway depicted in the statue reflects the time when Hemingway lived in Key West himself.

The details in the statue bring Hemingway back to life through careful attention and a communal appreciation of his work and his time spent on the island. The statue features Hemingway’s belt positioned over his belt loops, just as he had worn it, as well as a pencil in his pocket as an homage to Hemingway often choosing to write with pencil instead of using a typewriter. The statue also includes a Nick & Nora coupe glass in hand as a nod to Hemingway’s frequent use of the glassware he used when enjoying drinks at La Floridita.
As visitors enter Papa’s Pilar, they are encouraged to reflect on the legacy Hemingway created, all while enjoying a glass (or taking home a bottle) of some Papa’s Pilar ultra-premium rum.
