Summer is the season for music festivals — more than one can attend in a lifetime so we picked six of our favorites. Enjoy!
Governors Ball Music Festival
When: June 3–5, 2016
Where: New York City, N.Y.
Governors Ball is New York’s answer to Coachella and Bonnaroo, succeeding where others have failed in throwing a large scale, multi-day festival. For three days in the beginning of June, Randall’s Island is packed with top musical acts from around the world as well as the best local food Brooklyn has to offer.
Electric Daisy Carnival
When: June 17–19, 2016
Where: Las Vegas, Nev.
Electric Daisy Carnival returns to the Las Vegas Motorspeedway for three days in June. The festival, the largest dance music event outside of Europe, is expected to draw around half a million people for the weekend.
Camp Bisco
When: July 14–16, 2016
Where: Scranton, Pa.
Camp Bisco was created by the electronic jam band Disco Biscuits who came up with the idea for a festival that combines DJ with improvisational rock bands. The first event took place in 1999, right when electronica and jam bands like Sound Tribe Sector 9 were starting to take off.
Newport Folk Festival
When: July 22–24, 2016
Where: Newport, R.I.
The highly acclaimed Newport Folk Festival is counterpart to the equally prestigious Newport Jazz Festival. Many first heard of the festival in 1965 because of the Electric Dylan controversy, when Bob Dylan performed with an electric guitar for the first time to the resentment of folk purists.
Shambhala Music Festival
When: Aug. 5–8, 2016
Where: Salmo, B.C.
Similar to Burning Man in Nevada, Shambhala is a DIY music and arts festival set in the backcountry of British Columbia. Mostly dedicated to electronic music, the event is family operated and does not accept any corporate sponsors despite being one of the largest rave festivals in Canada.
Afropunk Festival – New York
When: Aug. 27–28, 2016
Where: New York, N.Y.
Insipired by the documentary, Afropunk was created as an outlet for minorities active in various punk rock subcultures. The music festival is now in its 12th year, bringing together alternative Black communities for a celebration of music, film and art.
