With a new year of travel on the horizon, many take a new approach to travel plans. After a year of record-breaking tourist numbers at some of the world’s most popular destinations, many travelers look to cities offering as much, if not more, as the popular counterparts, without the oppressive crowds and budget-blowing cost.
If England is on your upcoming 2024 itinerary, consider a visit to the beautiful city of Liverpool. While London has more great attractions than you can count, Liverpool is an amazing option that gives you a glimpse into a different England, with a thriving cultural scene that helps shape its unique personality.
Liverpool has quite a musical reputation — after all, it is the birthplace of the Beatles, and that music scene is a big draw for many. To check out some of the local talent, head to Cavern Quarter, an area of the city consisting of the area surrounding Mathew Street. You can visit the infamous Cavern Club for live music starting every day at 11 a.m. or get your fill of Beatles history at Beatles Museum and spend a night at the Beatles-inspired Hard Days Night Hotel.
The Waterfront, another of Liverpool’s many interesting districts, is home to some iconic local sites and is an area letting you get to know the city’s artistic side. It is home to Three Graces, a collection of three historical landmarks: the Cunard Building, the Royal Liver Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. While there, take a stroll along Royal Albert Dock, where you can find some of the city’s best art galleries, museums, shops and eateries.
Liverpool’s rich maritime history is evident throughout the city, but especially in the Ropewalks District, which got its name from the ropes historically made here for local sailor ships. Known as a crafting quarter, Ropewalks is the place to go in Liverpool to get a feel for the city’s cultural vibe. This is where you can go to sample international foods and shops or take in a show. One thing you won’t want to miss is a visit to Bombed Out Church, a local nickname for St. Luke’s Church. Named for the fact the roof was destroyed during a World War II bombing, this historic site is now home to fun local events like craft fairs and musical performances.
Whether you spend a few days or several in Liverpool, you will find yourself immersed in a fascinating city giving London a run for its money.
