Tips / Travel

Maybe your flight is delayed, your bus has a flat tire or you’re just sharing a room with noisy mates. Whatever the case, there is an art to sleeping anywhere, at any time. Try our tips to catch zzz’s no matter where you are.

Keep Noise Out

Whether you choose to play music or not, noise-canceling headphones or earplugs can be your best friend. Use them to drown out the not-so-sweet sounds of people arguing, loud construction or just heavy breathing.

Cover Up With an Eye Mask

A brightly lit room can make it difficult to fall asleep no matter how tired you are. Use a dark-colored eye mask to block out sunlight — or any other type of light.

Adjust the Temperature

Extreme temps make it hard to get comfortable and nod off. Try packing a lightweight blanket to warm up with in cooler climates. In warmer locales, turn on air conditioning or fans, choose the lower bunk bed in hostels or even consider sleeping outside. Many places have hammocks for rent. The cool nighttime breeze might be all you need to get a good night’s rest.

Stick to Your Routine

Keep to your normal rise and shine schedule as much as possible when traveling. While it might be tempting to party all night and sleep all day, it will throw your body’s internal clock out of whack, making it that much harder to get quality sleep in.
