Taking the slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang in Laos has often been a staple on most backpacker trips to Southeast Asia. It was usually the only feasible, though uncomfortable, way to get into the country from the north of Thailand.

Now, however, Shompoo Cruise is letting you experience the two-day trip in style.

Their boats are 40 meters long with room for 40 passengers to ride comfortably and not squished together like most public options. They also provide a sun deck, bar and extra seating area in the back if you prefer to pal around with other travelers and play card games or what have you.

The cruise provides lunch each day of the trip as you cruise down the Mekong on a 200-horsepower engine and watch the lush mountain landscape float on by. During your trip, you’ll come face to face with local villages along the shore and might even spot elephants bathing in the river.

The boat stops overnight in the quaint little town of Pakbeng, though accommodation here is included at an additional price. The small village is only a couple of roads long and will give you a taste of how locals are able to manage life along the mighty Mekong.

You have the option of taking the cruise downstream or up, though downstream is the most popular option. The cruises start as low as $150 for a two-day trip and go up from there depending upon your accommodation needs.
