Staying nourished while traveling is crucial. However, buying food at the airport can hurt your wallet and sometimes your stomach. Dine smart when traveling.
Before you leave for the airport make sure you eat breakfast (if it’s an early flight) or lunch/dinner (for afternoon/evening flights). This will make you less tempted to binge at the gate.
Pack snacks high in protein, like beef jerky, almonds and hard-boiled eggs. Pre-packaged bars, like KIND bars, offer many different flavor varieties all with high protein from nuts. Fruits and vegetables with hummus serve as a filling treat. String cheese isn’t just for kids. Bring the protein-filled snack to accompany crackers or pretzels. Justin’s
makes a variety of nut butters in convenient travel-size packages offering a protein boost on the go.
If bringing food from home, make sure any items are wrapped or in a container. All food must go through security and unwrapped foods will be confiscated. Unpeeled fruits, like bananas, are acceptable, but half-eaten or sliced fruits must be wrapped. Beverages of 3 ounces or less in one-quart-size clear, plastic zip-top bags will pass through security. For those wanting a larger size drink, bring an empty reusable travel bottle and fill up at a water fountain once you clear security. Nalgene, Under Armour
and CamelBak
offer a nice selection.
As always, check the TSA website before traveling for all food/beverage questions.
