Hungry and looking for a respite from the rainy morning, I decided on Somethin’ Else Café. The café is low-key and less fancy than some of the nearby restaurants in the French Quarter. Large windows let plenty of natural light into the intimate space.
The authentic Cajun-inspired fare is made from scratch, so expect menu changes depending on the season. We started with coffee and fresh-squeezed orange juice. With many tasty breakfast items, we decided to split two dishes. We ordered a chicken fried biscuit and the shrimp and grits.
Despite being packed, we were served fairly quickly. The chicken fried biscuit, boasting “local’s choice” on the menu, filled the plate. The large, crumbly biscuit was a perfect texture. It was topped with juicy fried chicken tenders and smothered with sausage gravy. The light and flaky biscuit, perfectly seasoned chicken and rich and peppery sausage gravy was a knockout combination. The Southern menu staple of shrimp and grits was equally delicious. The cheesy grits were topped with an ample serving of shrimp, crisp bacon and their trinity — a cooking base usually consisting of peppers, onions and celery. The large portion sizes made for a very filling breakfast. The atmosphere, quick service and elevated comfort food made for a great dining experience.
