Sustainable luxury resort operator Soneva advances toward its goal of 50 percent solar power in 2024 for its properties in the Maldives: Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani. Both resorts are on pace to achieve this goal by the end of 2024, thanks in part to new photovoltaic installations.

German-headquartered Aareal Bank provided $10 million in funding, which allowed Soneva to expand its development of solar power at its resorts. As a future improvement, the resorts may install solar panels in the ocean surrounding the resorts
“Our investment in solar energy demonstrates our commitment to sustainability at the same time as contributing positively to our bottom line,” said Bruce Bromley, chief financial officer and deputy CEO, Soneva. “Embracing solar power on such a significant scale has substantially reduced our carbon footprint and demonstrates what is possible in the hospitality industry. The invaluable support from Aareal Bank has paved the way for integrating our energy systems with other renewable technologies, propelling us closer to our goal of achieving fossil fuel-free operations.”

Beyond solar power goals, Soneva also expands its existing sustainability initiatives, including rainwater harvesting, to further enhance the resorts’ energy usage.
