An undeniable powerhouse in both the gaming and general consumer electronics industries, Sony’s newest product delivers video and games in one compact device. The PlayStation TV is the younger sibling to the Vita TV, which was released with moderate success in Japan in 2013. A mere 4 ounces in weight and four inches in length, the portable PlayStation TV features USB and HDMI ports, PlayStation Vita and memory card slots and both WiFi and ethernet connectivity.
Though it doesn’t have 1080p or surround-sound output, the PS TV can stream PS4 games through Remote Play, allowing it to essentially function as a second system without the cost, and it supports DualShock 3 and 4 controllers. It can also stream PlayStation, Playstation 2 and PlayStation 3 games through PlayStation Now, and it’s compatible with many PS Vita games. The PS TV comes with Sony Video Unlimited streaming, and there’s also a good chance it will offer Netflix streaming, though this has yet to be confirmed.
While the PlayStation TV might not be the most advanced piece of media streaming technology available today, it’s a great device for consolidating PlayStation gameplay and video streaming on a budget. It will be available for $99.99 in the United States Oct. 14, and £84.99 when it releases in the United Kingdom later this year. Learn more about the PlayStation TV on Sony’s website.
