Chicago’s SOPHY Hyde Park lies in the heart of Hyde Park, one of the city’s most culturally diverse areas. The neighborhood’s diversification began during the Great Migration of the 1920s, when Blacks moved north from the rural south and settled in the area for its jobs, homes and creative cultural vibe.
The 98-room SOPHY Hyde Park commits daily to honoring the neighborhood’s Black history, including through its display of artwork from renowned contemporary Chicago artists and Hyde Park Academy high school students. Guestrooms boast Crosley record players with a selection of vinyl from Black artists with strong Chicago ties.
Other highlights in the neighborhood include The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, the nation’s oldest independent museum of this kind; and, directly across the street from the hotel, is a plaque on the “Kissing Rock,” marking the spot where Barack and Michelle Obama shared their first kiss. Michelle Obama grew up in this neighborhood and the Obamas have a home here. The Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park, a few blocks away, is under construction.
To celebrate both Black History Month and Valentine’s Day, SOPHY offers the SOPHY SO-In Love package, including:
- Two nights in a deluxe guestroom or suite
- Bottle of Champagne
- Vosges Chocolates
- One brunch for two in Mesler Chicago, up to $100
- Gift certificate toward outdoor skating for two at Midway Plaisance Park
