Tips / Travel

With the cost of checked baggage always on the rise, finding ways to make the most of your carry-on is one of the easiest ways to cut down on the cost of flying. Although figuring out how to pack everything you need for a trip into just a carry-on may be daunting, it’s totally possible and actually fairly easy. Work these tricks into your packing routine to see just how much can fit in a regulation size carry-on.

Roll, don’t fold

Clothes are an obvious culprit when it comes to taking up space. So instead of folding your clothes, roll them, Bonus points if you roll outfits together to make everything compact and easy to organize.

Use your destination

Don’t feel like you have to bring everything with you. Make the most of the tools you’ll have on arrival. If you’re staying at a hotel, remember that you’ll have access to shampoo and soap, and just bring what you’ll need to make them work for you, such as conditioner if hotel shampoo dries out your hair. Check with any hostel or hotel you are staying in to check on things like hair dryers.

Plan for low maintenance

It’s totally possible to look amazing and not pack an entire closet. When mapping out what you’ll want to wear and style yourself, opt for looks that take little time and fewer products. Make sure your clothes can stand up to wear and still look great. Pack shoes that are versatile and comfortable — nothing starts cramping a carry-on like a few pairs of heels.

Wear what you can

Got a cute scarf you’re bringing? Wear it to the airport. Need to bring a pair of boots? It might be a pain, but wear them. Along with this, take advantage of the “personal item” allowance to put small items in a purse that’s easy to wear. It will save you space in your larger bag, and make it easier to keep essential items at hand.
