Spain is a popular country for travelers for its food, architecture and relatively low prices compared to other European countries.
The country’s small towns also enchant travelers; in fact, Spain codified the best of the best through its Association of the Most Beautiful Towns in Spain. The list will see an additional 13 towns added in 2017; the list previously contained 44.
The designation was inspired by a similar list developed in France: Les plus beau villages de la France. The Spanish counterpart launched in 2011.
“It is our goal to promote preferably rural and small towns,” the association says on its website.
Any qualifying town can apply for consideration, but only 20 percent make the list. To qualify, towns must have fewer than 15,000 people and some architectural or cultural heritage value.
The latest additions include Grazalema, Cádiz province, Andalusia; Puebla de Sanabria, Zamora province, Castile-León; Villanueva de los Infantes, Ciudad Real province, Castilla-La Mancha; Miranda del Castañar, Salamanca region, Castile-León; and Capileira, Granada province, Andalusia.
